- NO EMPATHY, NO REALITY: Specific Personality Disorders
Personality disorders are a type of mental disorder characterized by a rigid and unhealthy pattern of thinking, feeling, and behaving that deviates significantly from the expectations of the individual's culture and leads to functional impairment or distress. There are several different types of personality disorders, each with their own specific set of symptoms and criteria for diagnosis. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) lists ten specific personality disorders, which are grouped into three clusters: - Cluster A: Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal Personality Disorders (discussed in a previous blog) - Cluster B: Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, and Narcissistic Personality Disorders - Cluster C: Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorders (discussed in a previous blog) We’ve not dealt with some of these disorders in Cluster B. These are a group of disorders characterized by deeply ingrained patterns of behavior. These symptoms deviate from the norm and cause significant social or occupational impairment. It would be advantageous to research each of these on their own: borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, avoidant personality disorder, dependent personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, and paranoid personality disorder. Personality disorders can have a significant impact on an individual's ability to form and maintain healthy relationships, and can also affect their ability to function effectively in work or social situations. Treatment for personality disorders typically involves a combination of therapy, medication, and support from family and friends, and can be highly effective in helping individuals manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Specifically, we want to focus on Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). This is a type of personality disorder characterized by a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy for others. Individuals with NPD often have an inflated sense of self-importance and may believe they are superior to others. They may also have a sense of entitlement, expecting special treatment and attention from others. People with NPD may be preoccupied with fantasies of success, power, and attractiveness, and may exaggerate their achievements and talents. They may also be envious of others and believe that others are envious of them. Despite their apparent confidence and self-assuredness, individuals with NPD may be fragile and easily hurt by criticism or rejection. NPD can have a significant impact on an individual's relationships, as they may struggle to connect with others on an emotional level and may have difficulty understanding or empathizing with the feelings of others. They may also be prone to exploiting others for their own gain, and may have a sense of entitlement that leads them to disregard the needs and feelings of others. Treatment for NPD typically involves a combination of therapy and medication, and may focus on helping individuals develop more realistic and adaptive ways of thinking about themselves and others. While NPD can be a challenging disorder to treat, with the right support and interventions, individuals with NPD can learn to manage their symptoms and improve their relationships and quality of life. - OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER: When Everyday Is A Struggle
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health disorder characterized by a pattern of uncontrollable, recurring thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) that the individual feels driven to perform in response to the obsessions. The obsessions and compulsions can become so severe that they interfere with daily functioning and cause significant distress and anxiety. There are a several disorders that can be tied to OCD. The primary conditions include obsessions and compulsions. It is important to note that some experts describe this as a condition and not a disorder. It is a common assumption that “hoarding” should be placed in this specific category. Common obsessions may include fear of contamination, fear of causing harm to oneself or others, excessive concern with orderliness or symmetry, and unwanted, intrusive thoughts of an aggressive or sexual nature. Compulsions often involve repetitive behaviors such as excessive cleaning, checking, counting, or arranging objects in a specific way. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects approximately 1-2% of the global population. In the United States, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports that about 1.2% of adults in the U.S. have OCD in a given year. The International OCD Foundation suggests that 1 in 100 adults and 1 in 200 kids have OCD in America. OCD can affect people of any gender, age, or socioeconomic background. The disorder often begins in childhood or adolescence and can last throughout a person's life if left untreated. It is also common for people with OCD to have other mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety. While the exact causes of OCD are not fully understood, research suggests that a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurobiological factors may contribute to the development of the disorder. Treatment for OCD, however, can be very effective, with a combination of medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes helping many people manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure and response prevention (ERP) are effective forms of therapy for OCD. Antidepressant medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are often prescribed to help reduce the symptoms of OCD. A simple google search reveals that some of our favorite celebrities have OCD. Many people who suffer from OCD live perfectly normal lives. In fact, OCD often runs in the family. Therefore, it is highly likely that someone else in your family also struggles with the same condition. This offers an individual an opportunity to have some serious conversations about the mental health of your family. If you, or someone you know, struggles with obsessive compulsive disorder… please seek a mental health professional. There is hope. Take your mental health seriously. You are loved. - HEALING FROM ADDICTION: Substance Abuse Disorders
Substance abuse disorders, also known as substance use disorders, are a type of mental health disorder. They are characterized by the recurrent use of drugs or alcohol despite the negative consequences that result from such use. Several disorders are characterized by a problematic pattern of substance use or abuse. Some of these include alcohol and/or drugs, leading to significant impairment or distress. Individuals who struggle with this disorder may actually feel that the abuse of the substance is helping them cope with stress or anxiety. However, statistics show that substance abuse only compounds the problem. There are tremendous amounts of negative consequences for those who abuse a substance. This can include physical health problems, social and interpersonal problems, and legal and financial problems. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), in 2020, an estimated 23.1 million Americans aged 12 or older needed treatment for a substance use disorder. Substance abuse disorders can involve the use of a wide range of substances, including alcohol, tobacco, prescription drugs, and illegal drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. The severity of a substance abuse disorder can range from mild to severe, depending on factors such as the frequency and amount of substance use, the individual's physical and psychological response to the substance, and the presence of co-occurring mental health disorders. In 2020, an estimated 13.7 percent of people aged 12 or older had used an illicit drug in the past year, and 7.9 percent had used a prescription drug for non-medical reasons. Alcohol is the most commonly used substance in the United States, with an estimated 85.6 percent of people aged 18 or older reporting that they had consumed alcohol at some point in their lifetime, and 55.3 percent reporting that they had consumed alcohol in the past month. Opioid abuse is also a significant problem in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2019, there were 49,860 opioid overdose deaths in the United States, and an estimated 1.6 million people had an opioid use disorder. As this blog is being written we are experiencing a ridiculous amount of fentanyl in the US. Hundreds, maybe even thousands, are being exposed on a daily basis. Substance abuse disorders are typically diagnosed through a combination of clinical assessment and standardized diagnostic criteria, such as those outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Treatment for substance abuse disorders often involves a combination of medication, behavioral therapy, and support groups. Successful treatment can help individuals with substance abuse disorders achieve and maintain long-term recovery. It's worth noting that the COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on substance abuse trends in the United States. For example, there have been reports of increased alcohol and drug use during the pandemic, as well as disruptions to treatment and recovery services. If you, or someone you know, struggles with substance abuse… please seek a mental health professional. There is hope. Take your mental health seriously. You are loved. - THE TOP 10 MOST COMMON MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS
There are many different types of mental health disorders. Their prevalence varies depending on the population studied, stressors and other subjective factors. However, some of the most common mental health disorders can be both diagnosed and treated before things get worse. Recently, I was reading an article on PsychCentral about various psychological disorders and felt it might be advantageous for us to consider certain patterns, symptoms, and other things that might contribute to changes in one’s mood or behavior. 1. Anxiety disorders: These are a group of disorders characterized by excessive fear, worry, or nervousness. Examples include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, panic attacks, agoraphobia, separation, anxiety disorder, specific, phobias, postpartum, anxiety and social anxiety disorder. 2. Mood disorders: mood disorders are described as mental health conditions that can vary from the highs of mania to the lows of depression. These are a group of disorders characterized by significant changes in mood, such as depression or bipolar disorder. Other examples include major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder, situational depression and cyclomatic disorder. 3. Substance use/abuse disorders: These are disorders characterized by a problematic pattern of use of a substance, such as alcohol or drugs, leading to significant impairment or distress. Individuals who struggle with this disorder may actually feel that the abuse of the substance is helping them cope with stress or anxiety. However, statistics show that substance abuse only compounds the problem. 4. Psychotic disorders: These are a group of disorders characterized by a loss of contact with reality, such as schizophrenia. These disorders are mainly categorized by delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thoughts or speech, and abnormal movements. The symptoms are usually negative and should be handled with a mental health professional. 5. Obsessive compulsive disorders: There are a several disorders that can be tied to OCD. The primary conditions include obsessions and compulsions. Some experts describe this as a condition and not a disorder. It is a common assumption that “hoarding” should be placed in this specific category. 6. Eating disorders: This specific disorder includes practices that disrupt one’s eating patterns. Examples include anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. The onset of this disorder may come from specific trauma or subjective and situational. This disorder can affect both weight, overall personal health, and mental stress. 7. Stress related disorders: The number of stressors in one’s life is completely subjective. Some may specifically deal with anxiety disorder, OCD, PTSD, or dissociative disorders (next). However, stress related disorders are based on individual trauma or an event that causes extreme stress. Reactive attachment disorder and adjustment disorder also fall into this category. 8. Dissociative disorders: This disorder includes anything that might disrupt or impair an individual. Continued stress or trauma can exacerbate this disorder. Examples may include amnesia, identity related disorders, and a vast amount of other issues that would impair memory, emotions, and perception. 9. Neurodevelopment disorders: This disorder more than likely begins in early childhood development. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopment disorders. Other examples would include autism, Asperger’s syndrome, Rett syndrome, social learning or similar communication disorders. If left untreated, these disorders may cause more issues later in life. 10. Personality disorders: These are a group of disorders characterized by deeply ingrained patterns of behavior. These symptoms deviate from the norm and cause significant social or occupational impairment. Examples include borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, avoidant personality disorder, dependent personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, and paranoid personality disorder. Time and space does not permit us to discuss a host of other mental health conditions. There are many who deal with sexual dysfunctions, voyeurism, insomnia, narcolepsy, restless, leg syndrome, neurocognitive disorders, and LGBTQ+ related mental issues. There is a host of manias and phobias that could also be discussed at a later date. It's important to note that mental health disorders are complex and can often co-occur with one another. I highly encourage you to visit with a mental health professional if you or a loved one struggles with one of these disorders. There is hope! Take your mental health seriously. You are loved. - Unity in the Spirit
In the Fall of 2015, after a series of tests, it was determined that I needed gall bladder surgery. I have had many surgeries and procedures in the past, but this one was much different. My doctor determined that my gall bladder had to be removed ASAP. My spleen was enlarged, my stomach was constantly in knots and there were polyps inside my gall bladder. People began to call me, who had the surgery, and prepared me for a few “possible” side effects. I became very nervous for the surgery. After my surgery I was unprepared for the recovery. The most painful part of the experience was neck and shoulder pain (because of air pumped into my diaphragm during surgery) and nausea (due to anesthesia and pain meds). When I experienced pain it had nothing to do with the four incisions or the spot where my gall bladder was removed. That was shocking to me! What I noticed was when one part of my body was removed… other parts began to hurt. The phrase “the Body of Christ” is a common New Testament metaphor for the Church (all those who are truly saved). The Church is called “one body in Christ” in Romans 12:5, “one body” in I Corinthians 10:17, “the body of Christ” in I Corinthians 12:27 and Ephesians 4:12, and “the body” in Hebrews 13:3. The Church is clearly equated with “the body” of Jesus Christ in Ephesians 5:23 and Colossians 1:24. What happens when one part of the body isn’t functioning properly? The whole body is affected. What happens when one part of the body is cut off? The whole body is affected. Not one part of the body is any greater than another and each part is needed (Romans 12, I Corinthians 12). This was an unexpected side effect of my surgery. It took me weeks to recover from what my doctor said was a “routine” surgery. When Christ entered our world, He took on a physical body “prepared” for Him (Hebrews 10:5, Philippians 2:7). Through His physical body, Jesus demonstrated the love of God, especially through His sacrificial death on the cross (Romans 5:8). After His bodily ascension, Christ continues His work in the world through those He has redeemed—the Church of Christ (Romans 16:16). When we are saved, this is why the Lord adds us to the church (Acts 2:42). So that we can become a part of something bigger. Better. Stronger. Let’s work together in the unity of the Spirit of God. Let’s use our talents. Let’s share our spiritual gifts. If one part of the body is hurting, or about to be cut out of the Body, let’s reach out to help. Have a great week! You are loved. - THE SILENT KILLER: The Warning Signs of Depression
Depression is a common mental health disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. In fact, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression worldwide. In the United States, an estimated 17.3 million adults (7.1% of the adult population) had at least one major depressive episode in 2019, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Those numbers increased through the COVID-19. pandemic. Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, according to the WHO. Depression is more common among women than men, with women experiencing depression at a rate of about 2:1 compared to men. Recent statistics also show that depression among teens and adolescents are very high. In a recent blog we addressed this issue. We also noted that suicide is a major complication of depression. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 10-34. Depression can affect people in different ways, and the symptoms can vary from person to person. However, there are some common warning signs and symptoms that may indicate that someone is experiencing depression. Some of these signs and symptoms include: 1. Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or helplessness 2. Loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable 3. Changes in appetite and weight (loss or gain) 4. Chances in sleep patterns (sleeping too little or too much) 5. Fatigue and low energy levels 6. Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering things 7. Irritability, restlessness, or easily agitated 8. Feelings of emptiness, worthlessness or guilt 9. Physical symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches, or random muscle pain 10. Recurring thoughts of death or suicide 11. Inability to work or focus on the job 12. Self-medicating with substances Not everyone who is experiencing depression will display all of these symptoms, and some people may display symptoms that are not on this list. Depression is treatable, but unfortunately, many people do not seek treatment. According to the NIMH, only about half of the people with depression seek treatment. This should change. This is also why we need a reminder each May with an emphasis on mental health awareness. It's important to note that depression is a complex disorder, and the statistics may vary depending on various factors, such as age, gender, ethnicity, and geographic location. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of depression, it's important to seek help from a mental health professional. One option is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). You can also text “HOME” to the Crisis Text Line at 741741. - COMMON TEEN STRESSORS: How To Diagnose & Manage Anxiety
Our teens are at an increased risk of anxiety and depression. Teenagers experience high levels of stress for a variety of reasons. Many times this stress can make them feel overwhelmed or frustrated. Other times they may consider more drastic measures like self-harm. The church must do a better job of seeing this need and helping to prevent disaster. We must learn what steps can be taken to decrease stress and lower levels of anxiety. What are common stressors? FAMILY DYNAMICS - One manor cause of high stress in teens is family dynamics. Family issues. Family conflicts. Divorce. Financial problems. Substance abuse. These can cause high stress in teenagers. This removes security and brings trust issues. They may feel happiness or contentment are out of reach. PHYSICAL CHANGES - Another major cause for stress is hormonal changes. This often gets used as an excuse but it is very real. The hormonal changes that occur during puberty can lead to mood swings, growing pains and fear of the unknown. There are chemical and biological changes that are as dangerous as any other hazardous material. We must be cautious in how we approach various issues so as not to produce additional, unnecessary stress. SOCIAL PRESSURE - We’ve previously identified social media as an obvious danger. Adolescence is a time of significant social change and development. Many pre-teens and teenagers may feel pressure to fit in with their peers or to conform to social norms. This peer pressure influences them to make drastic and unpredictable changes. LIMITATIONS & EXPECTATIONS - Education and academic pressure is also high on teenagers. Kids may feel stressed due to the pressure to perform well in school, maintain good grades, and achieve success in extracurricular activities. Some students are able to balance their social and academic pursuits. However, most find themselves wrestling with how to adequately prepare for their future. They can barely handle the stress of the present and struggle with overcoming the past. FUTURE UNCERTAINTY - Finally, there is the stress of uncertainty and unpredictable future events. Teenagers may feel stressed about their future, such as choosing a college or career path, and the pressure to make important decisions. Many will launch into college without a clue on a major. Some may complete college and rarely (if ever) use that expensive learning for their career. The college experience is more about socializing, dating and having fun. It is important for parents, teachers, and other adults to be aware of these potential stressors and to provide teenagers with the necessary support and resources to help them cope with stress in healthy ways. This may include encouraging regular exercise, providing opportunities for relaxation and self-care, and helping teenagers develop effective coping strategies, such as mindfulness, time management, and problem-solving skills. In our next blog, I will discuss the recent statistics on self harm, and how to talk to your teenager about suicide. This has become an epidemic in the last decade. Let’s get serious about mental health. You are loved. - Resisting The Holy Spirit
The Bible really has a lot to say about the Holy Spirit. I hope you’ve picked up on that in our blogs this year. Previously we’ve talked about the fruit of the Spirit and why there are no laws against it (Galatians 5:23). One specific thing the Scriptures warn about is attempting to test God. We should not test the Spirit, resist the Spirit, attempt to quench the Spirit or blaspheme the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:17 says, "For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish." Paul says we are selfish and we want what we want! Sounds about right, huh? However, often times what we want is NOT what the Spirit wants! There are several times in Paul's writings he gives us a look into this personal battle he faced basically asking: "Why is it I do what I know I shouldn't do." Here is the answer: Because of the flesh vs. the Spirit battle. Read the latter part of Ephesians 6 and you can understand how to be equipped for the battle against the flesh. Satan is on the attack! And, we must resist him, not the spirit! We have to learn to see how Satan works and take up the whole armor of God! But, DO NOT resist the Spirit! He is our guide, our aid, and our comforter! In 20-30 years from now I think our brotherhood will look back and say that one of our biggest mistakes was resisting the work of the Holy Spirit. We will look back in frustration (I hope) and see the false teachings of Tritheism that tore us apart. Remember why they stoned Stephen to death in Acts 7? They resisted the teaching of the truth. Because of their resistance he said, “You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit!” (Acts 7:51) This wasn’t isolated to these people. Have you read Revelation? The message Jesus spoke to each of the seven churches in Asia was different, but the conclusion of each message was the same: "He who has an ear to hear let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches" (Revelation 2-3). They too resisted the Holy Spirit! Today we can resist the Holy Spirit by rejecting what He has revealed, by ignoring His guidance, by forgetting His teaching, and by being disobedient to His instructions. Why would we do that? The gates of Hell will not prevail against Christ's church! Why would we ignore that power and that promise? God will not be a stumbling block to His own children! If anyone hinders the growth of His kingdom, its Christians who resist the Spirit. We need to talk about Him, study about Him, and be led by Him. We must not let this fellowship become our fellowship! It's Christ's church! And, Christ's church worships in the Spirit and fellowships in the Spirit and is led by the Spirit! He is the glue that keeps us together! Don’t resist Him! Have a great week! You are loved. - No Laws Against The Fruit of the Spirit
Paul has no issues being bold! In his boldness he urges the churches of Galatia to walk by the Spirit. Listen to what he said to them in Galatians 5: 16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Paul clearly warns the Galatians about the works of the flesh and then identified the fruit of the Spirit. However, at the end of this list he reminds the reader that there are no laws against these the fruit of the Spirit (all nine of them). Have you ever noticed how many laws we do have? Some are silly! Think about the state of Alabama for just a moment. It is illegal to engage in bear wrestling matches. It is illegal to impersonate a person of the clergy. It is illegal to maim oneself to escape duty. It is illegal to open an umbrella on a street, for fear of spooking horses. It is illegal to play Dominoes on Sunday. It is illegal to put salt on a railroad track (may be punishable by death). It is illegal to flick boogers into the wind. It is illegal to drive the wrong way down a one-way street (unless you have a lantern attached to the front of your automobile). It is illegal to drive a car without windshield wipers. It is illegal to carry an ice cream cone in your back pocket at any time. It is illegal to wear masks in public. It is illegal for a driver to be blindfolded while operating a vehicle. It is illegal to wear a fake moustache that causes laughter in church (toupees are permitted). There are a lot of laws we have to follow, but there are NO LAWS against the fruit of the Spirit. No laws against love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Over the next few weeks I want us to see why. Many of the works of the flesh are illegal, but not the fruit of the Spirit. Why is that? Why are there no laws against the fruit of the Spirit? Because it is God's will! His Spirit longs to overcome this cruel dark world. Are you bearing the fruit of the Spirit? You are loved. - Led By The Spirit
The Jews really struggled with letting go of the law? Why? It is so comfortable knowing that everything you need to know can be found in one place. It limits you and, in a way, it limits God. People would often rather be led by the law than by the Spirit. I realize it may not be a popular view (but it’s true) that God does what God wants. He is not bound by any limitations. It is true that He is not slack concerning His promises (II Peter 3:9), and is described as unchanging (Malachi 3:6), but if He wants to remove, revoke, or supersede a previous statement… He is God! He can do it! If you don’t believe that do a study of Bible covenants and how many times God uses the term “forever” in Scripture. He does what He wants and offers no apology. Have you read the book of Job? It is the story of a man who was raised on a “black and white” scenario: Live right and get rewarded. What did he do when his world turned upside down? He spent days and hours debating it (Job 3-37). He defended himself. He defended his children. He even defended God! How did God answer Job and his friends? Basically He said, “I am God. You are not.” THE END. If you tell me there is a grey area I might just run to one end or the other to pick a side! We choose black or white. We have no middle ground. I used to hear an old preacher say, “It’s dangerous in the middle of the road. Choose the right or choose the left. Anything else and you’ll get run over!” But, Paul is writing to the Galatians so that they would release their grip on the law (right or left). Galatians 5:18 says, "But if the Spirit is leading you, you are not under the law." (NCV) Listen carefully to what Paul says. We live under a new law where we do not always have the luxury of knowing what to do for every single decision life throws at us! Sometimes the Bible is silent on certain matters. What then? We pray for wisdom (James 1:5-6). We study God’s Word (II Timothy 3:16-17). We ponder what Jesus would do (I Peter 2:21-25). Then, we let the Spirit lead us and guide us to do it. If you were given the choice would you rather live under the Old Law or the New Law? If you are unsure read Hebrews and then answer the question. If you like the Old Testament, and want to be guided by the law, you don't need the Spirit. As a matter of fact, you don't need Jesus either! You might be lost in your sin, but if you memorize the book of Leviticus you will be able to find a temporary solution to the problem. And, if God would honor it (you know better), you would safe until the next time you sin. The Holy Spirit of God must lead His people. Otherwise we are not His people at all! Think about Romans 8 and what Paul said about our adoption. We need the Spirit if we want to be called the children of God! He needs to lead us and guide us. We do not have all the answers and anyone who says he does, or that he/she is perfect, mark them. We need to surrender to the will and work of God! Have a great week! You are loved. - The Holy Spirit Anoints us
Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit dozens of times in His ministry. In the latter part of the gospel of John, before His death, He sought to clarify the coming of the Holy Spirit. In those verses He also explains His role. “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is Mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is Mine and make it known to you.” (John 16:13-15) If you have studied about the role of Christ Jesus, then you know He came to reveal the words of Father. As Jesus begins to close His earthly ministry, He seems to be symbolically passing the torch to the third part of the Godhead (the Holy Spirit). Many of the roles Christ fulfilled on earth the Holy Spirit would also fulfill. However, while in the flesh, Jesus walked beside the disciples. The Holy Spirit was coming to reside inside of them. He was not coming in flesh, but to live inside our flesh. “And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.” (Romans 8:9-11) There are many benefits to having the Holy Spirit inside of us as Christians. One benefit is the anointing of God (which we have not covered thus far in this series). Anointing is the initial act of the personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit. At our baptism, when we are saved from our sins by being cleansed by the precious blood of Christ (Acts 2:38-39), we are given the seal and anointing of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14, 4:30, II Corinthians 1:21-22, 5:5). What we do with that anointing is up to us! The Bible gives us several stories about the anointing of prophets, priests, and kings. In a round-about way we as Christians fulfill all of those roles as we preach, serve, and lead in the church. Why don’t we think of our walk as an anointed walk? Maybe you’ve heard televangelists and popular religious speakers discuss their “anointing.” Maybe you viewed that with skepticism, which you should (Matthew 7:15-16, 20), but do not dismiss the biblical teaching of God’s anointing. John spoke to the church in his first epistle and stated “you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things” (I John 2:20). Remember the promise Jesus had previously given to His disciples that they could understand the will of God, and words of Christ, with the aid of the Holy Spirit. Later John added, “but the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.” (I John 2:27) I can almost hear the arguments of some who might question, “Doesn’t that apply to the first century church when they had the supernatural power Holy Spirit?” Of course. But, why wouldn’t it apply now? The Holy Spirit still convicts men of sin. The Holy Spirit still indwells the believer. The Holy Spirit still makes intercession for us. Why wouldn’t He anoint us, aid us, and inspire us to follow the will of God? In fact, He wrote the Bible (I Peter 1:19-21)! And everything in it is “profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (II Timothy 3:16-17). With the anointing of the Holy Spirit we can see our purpose which will encourage us to plug into a ministry, bless others, and serve in the kingdom. Let's go bear the fruit of the Spirit and have a great week! You are loved. - The Holy Spirit in Romans (Part 3)
The Holy Spirit produces righteousness (Romans 8:10). If Christ is in the body of a Christian they are dead. They have died with Christ through the process of baptism (Romans 6:1-4). This burial is also the process that allows Christians to receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). Therefore, Christians are made righteous in Christ. This can only take place with baptism and the continual cleansing. The Holy Spirit quickens our mortal bodies (Romans 8:11). Our mortal body, now full of the Holy Spirit, is longing to shed our finite body for a more permanent one (I Corinthians 15). One might argue that just as the earth is going through birth pain (Matthew 24-25, I Thessalonians 5:3) so is the flesh. Our souls longs to be with God and the Holy Spirit fuels that desire. The Holy Spirit produces a spiritual resurrection (Romans 8:11). Even if Christ lives in the Christian through the Holy Spirit, the physical bodies still must die because of sin. The indwelling Spirit assures eternal life, because the person has been justified by Christ. God will also raise the mortal bodies to a glorious new life at the resurrection. This is one of the many hopes of a Christian but without the Holy Spirit it would never happen. One must remain faithful to the Lord to keep God’s Spirit (Psalm 51, Revelation 2:10). Many people will fall away from the Lord. The Holy Spirit is essential to life (Romans 8:12-13). It is important to remember that Christians are not of this world. Disciples need to make sure that they don’t live according to the flesh. There is no reason for Christians to continue living under the control of sin. They can be delivered by the Holy Spirit. Those who live under sin’s control will die, without hope of eternal life (I Corinthians 3:16-17). The Holy Spirit leads us (Romans 8:14, Galatians 5:18), which is consistent with the way He has always worked (Matthew 4:1, Luke 4:1, Acts 8:39).There is a need to realize that the Spirit of God dwells in every Christian, and then realize the need to take care of our bodies. If every Christian would do this it will please God (Romans 8:8). It would allow the Spirit lead us and help us receive eternal life. The Holy Spirit bears witness in us that we are children of God (Romans 8:16) and He is essential to us being sons of God (Romans 8:14-17). To be controlled by God’s Holy Spirit, shows that the person is one of His children. The Holy Spirit is “the Spirit of adoption” and assures the Christian that they are right with God (Romans 8:15). I John 3:24 also affirms that one’s own spirit, and the Holy Spirit, bear witness to the fact of their sonship. The presence of the Holy Spirit assures the obedient Christian that Christ abides in them. The gift of the Holy Spirit is the secret of true spirituality and effective service to God. Paul stresses the importance of the Spirit as a witness to salvation (Romans 8:16). This is also seen in I John 3:24, I John 4:13, and I John 5:6. *** More next week*** You are loved.
