- The Spiritual Kingdom of God
These works of the flesh are all around us, aren't they? Galatians 5:19-21 says, "The wrong things the sinful self does are clear: being sexually unfaithful, not being pure, taking part in sexual sins, worshiping gods, doing witchcraft, hating, making trouble, being jealous, being angry, being selfish, making people angry with each other, causing divisions among people, feeling envy, being drunk, having wild and wasteful parties, and doing other things like these. I warn you now as I warned you before: Those who do these things will not inherit God's kingdom." (NCV) Paul gives this long list of sins and transgressions. Then, notice his conclusion, "I've warned you over and over again." What was Paul's warning about these things? He says, "Those who do these things will NOT inherit God's kingdom." The Christian, who is led by the Spirit, will be led to do spiritual things! Not the works of the flesh. Doesn't that make sense? People of the world will seek to please themselves with temporary pleasures. People of the world to come will think about heavenly things and spiritual gifts and laying up treasures in heaven. We need to think like spiritual kingdom people! Not like the world! We seek to live in the light, not under the cover of darkness. When we do we will bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit of God. Galatians 5:22-23 says, "But the Spirit produces the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience (longsuffering), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. There is no law that says these things are wrong." (NCV) Notice that these could be divided into three groups: Group#1= “love, joy, peace” - Bearing Fruit For God Group #2 = “longsuffering, kindness, goodness” - Bearing Fruit For Others Group #3 = “faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” - Bearing Fruit For Ourselves In everything we do, we should be seeking to love our God, and our neighbors as ourselves. We do that by working, serving, fellowshipping, worshipping, and bearing fruit! As I stated early on in this series, no one can or will make a law against these nine things! Why is that the case? Because it is the will of God that we do them and NOTHING will get in God’s way! The kingdom of God is a spiritual one (John 8:23, 15:19, 17:14, 18:36, Romans 1:1-2, Ephesians 6:12). It has spiritual rule, spiritual government, it provides spiritual benefits, it creates spiritual knowledge, it occupies a spiritual territory, it reflects spiritual glory, it forms a spiritual citizenry, and it produces spiritual fruit. We are not of this world! We are in the waiting room (called life) and are preparing for eternity. Are you a part of God spiritual kingdom? Are you following God’s direction? Have a great week! You are loved. - The Holy Spirit Unifies Us
We often sing hymns, in our worship services, about the Holy Spirit. We sing songs about loving God spirit, understanding God spirit, being filled with God spirit, and watching God spirit move among His people. The Bible has a lot to say about recognizing what the Holy Spirit is doing for His people. I think one important thing, that must not be overlooked, is how we are brought into union with Christ through the Holy Spirit. Paul says, “If we have been united with Him like this in His death, we will certainly also be united with him in His resurrection” (Romans 6:5). The phrases "in Christ," "with Christ, "in Him," "in Whom," "in Jesus," and so on appear in the New Testament hundreds times. These phrases appear twelve times in the first chapter of Ephesians alone. Union with Christ is very closely associated with the doctrines of regeneration and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. As we have previously noted in this series, the Holy Spirit communes with us, starting at baptism (Acts 2:38-39, Romans 8). After our baptism, we are added to the Lord’s church and made members of the church which is Christ's body (I Corinthians 12:12-13). Water baptism places us into the same death, burial, and resurrection as Jesus (Romans 8:5). This union also gives us an inseparable union through adoption. Romans 8:15 speaks of "the Spirit of adoption" which we placing believers in the church as sons and daughters of God. We are given more than just a new body, and a clean slate, we are given a new identity with a new inheritance for eternal life. Previously we already noted II Corinthians 5:17 and Galatians 6:15 which refer to the new life we have in Christ Jesus. Hopefully this new birth will motivate us toward Christian living. The figures of the vine and the branches (John 15:1-8), marriage (Romans 7:4, Ephesians 5:32), and the Head and the body (Colossians 1:18, 2:6-7), indicate that believers cultivate Christlikeness (II Corinthians 3:18, II Peter 3:18, I John 3:1-3) after this new birth. Jesus spent a great deal of time talking to Nicodemus about this in John 3. This unity of the Holy Spirit causes us to regenerate. The Holy Spirit is the one responsible for our regeneration and conversion. We are born of God (John 1:12-13) who is the Father and Author of regeneration (I John 4:7, 5:1-18, 3:9). We join with the Son (John 5:21, II Corinthians 5:17). However, according to II Corinthians 3:6 (and Romans 8) that "the Spirit gives life." We are born anew, again, or from above according to John 3:3-5 into water and the Spirit (Acts 2, Titus 3:5). The Holy Spirit is the personal agent of our regeneration and keeps us in full unity with the Father and the Son. This would make sense why David did not want God to take His Holy Spirit from (Psalm 51). Remember that I Peter 1:23 tells us that in Christ we are not of corruptible seed. What is involved in regeneration? The Holy Spirit imparts a new nature which involves eternal life (II Peter 1:4). It is not just a quickening of the old nature (Ephesians 2:3, 4:24, Philippians 1:6, Colossians 2:13, II Corinthians 5:17). Therefore, as we noted three things are involved in this regeneration: 1) New birth (John 3:3-8), Resurrection (Romans 6:13, Ephesians 2:5, John 5:21, II Corinthians 5:17), and 3) Re-Creation (Ephesians 2:10, 4:24, II Corinthians 5:17) AND all three parts of the Godhead are involved. Will you stay united with Him? You are loved. - The Fastest Growing Religions & What This Means For The Church
In the early 2000s I began my search for a doctorate degree. The problem is that I had to narrow my focus. If you know me, you know how hard it was for me to choose ONE specific subject. I considered a DA at Trevecca, a DRS at Kansas State University, and a host of seminaries with biblical emphasis (DMin, PhD, ThD, etc.). I landed at Trinity with a pursuit of a DRS equivalent degree. I really wanted a PhD in ministry or preaching but it was great! In my final semester at Trinity they decided to offer the PdD in Pastoral Ministry. I jumped at the chance! However, I'd spent half a decade studying religion. Therefore, a few years after completing my PhD I found myself studying religious literacy at Harvard Divinity in the presence of dozens of religiously diverse people. This gave me access to new sources, books, videos and courses in Religious Literacy. While I do not plan to pursue another degree at this time, I am enjoying access to new resources. I want to see what's going on in religious circles in the world and study about the issues facing the church. As of 2021, the fastest growing religions in the world were Islam and Christianity. I understand growth rates can change over time due to various factors like demographic shifts, conversion rates, and birth rates. However, I started digging to see why Christianity is viewed as less popular in our culture. If it’s the fastest growing religious movement, why aren’t we seeing more positive news stories about Christianity. This blog will share the results of our research. Let’s start with the statistics. The five largest religious groups in terms of the number of adherents are: 1. Christianity: The largest religion in the world, with approximately 2.4 billion followers, accounting for about 31% of the global population. Christianity, especially in Africa and Asia, was experiencing significant growth due to conversions and population growth in those regions. However, these numbers are misleading. Catholics make up 1.3 billion and Protestants are 1.1 billion (stay tuned). 2. Islam: The second-largest religion in the world, with approximately 1.9 billion followers, accounting for about 24% of the global population. In the past few decades, Islam has been considered the fastest growing major religion in the world. The growth is mainly attributed to higher birth rates among Muslim populations and conversions. 3. Hinduism: The third-largest religion in the world, with approximately 1.2 billion followers, accounting for about 15% of the global population. Just over 3 million reside in the USA according to Pew Research. It is extremely popular in India, China and parts of Europe. Many “theologians” often refer to it as the “father of religions” because it is the oldest documented religion but Judaism is most certainly the oldest. 4. Buddhism: The fourth-largest religion in the world, with approximately 500 million followers, accounting for about 7% of the global population. Unlike Christianity, and other monotheistic religions. Buddhism does not worship a specific deity. This mashes it drastically different from even polytheistic religions. China is predominantly Buddhist or practices Confucianism. 5. Sikhism: The fifth-largest religion in the world, with approximately 30 million followers, accounting for less than 1% of the global population. Mostly popular in India (90%), Sikhism has grown in the United Kingdom and Canada. About half a million love in the USA. The largest Sikh populations in the states are found in California, New York and Washington. Other religious movements experience growth in some regions, but at a slower rate compared to monotheistic religions Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Additionally, there has been a notable increase in the number of people identifying as non-religious or unaffiliated with any specific religion. In fact, it is estimated that between 500-750 million people worldwide are atheist or agnostic. Why does this matter? My friends, Christianity is under attack. The Pew Research Center revealed that Christianity is persecuted in more countries around the world than other religions. Christians face harassment in 145 countries around the world (2018). This number includes the United States. The Action Institute stated in 2022 that 360 million Christians lived in countries where persecution was “significant.” Roughly 5,600 Christians were murdered, more than 6,000 were detained or imprisoned, and another 4,000 were kidnapped. In addition, more than 5,000 churches and other religious facilities were destroyed. Did you know this information? Probably not. Why not? It’s being kept from you. The media doesn't see this as news. The media is actively harassing the Christian faith. This is mainly directed toward Protestants which they call fundamentalist. They cram “pride” month, the LGBTQIA+ agenda, political correctness, woke culture and pro-choice propaganda down the throats of Christians that hold to a biblical worldview. In the past year, think of how many martyrs are highlighted in the news. Infrequently. Yet we know there are many. This is not reported in the news. Did you notice that the BBC ran a story in 2019 saying, “The persecution of Christians in parts of the world is at near genocide levels.” It was estimated that one in three Christians suffer from religious persecution. Have you read about what’s happening to Christians in Afghanistan, North Korea, China or Russia? Probably not. Why not? It’s being kept from you. The media is uninterested in sharing this information with you. Our culture has been taught that it’s okay to pick on Christians. The media influences various socio-economic, political, and cultural norms. They present a false narrative about Christians and target our households in an effort to “educate” us. Why? So the truth is kept from you. There is an agenda. Go back to the top of this list. Those who consider themselves “Christians” are statistically in the majority. Nothing aggravates atheists and agnostics like Christianity. It’s why they attempt to devalue the Bible and propagate hatred toward Christians. The culture war rages because liberals hate everything for which Christianity stands. We seek biblical standards. We lift up the family and the home. We believe in traditional marriage. We recognize there is only one God. We teach absolute truth. We choose life. The list goes on and on. Persecuting Christianity should be viewed as a hate crime. Christophobia or Christianophobia feeds discrimination and intolerance against Christians. Where is the outrage? Who is reporting the news stories, current stats and daily persecution? We need to open our eyes and do our own research. Stand up for the cause of Christ. Be strong in the face of Christian intolerance. Don’t sit idly but when we are mocked. Use your vote and your voice to make a difference. You are loved. - HEAVEN & HELL: Our Culture vs. The Bible
1. What does the Bible say about Hell? The Bible teaches that Hell is a place of punishment for those who have rejected God and refused to follow His ways. The concept of Hell is mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word "Sheol" is often used to refer to the place of the dead, which was thought to be a dark and shadowy underworld where all people went after death, both the righteous and the wicked. However, the concept of a place of punishment for the wicked is also mentioned in the Old Testament, such as in Isaiah 66:24, where it says, "And they shall go forth and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh." In the New Testament, Jesus often spoke of Hell as a place of punishment for those who reject God. In fact, He uses the same imagery as Isaiah. In Matthew 25:46, Jesus says, "And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." In Mark 9:48, Jesus describes Hell as a place where "the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched." The Bible teaches that the punishment of Hell is eternal and irreversible. Those who go to Hell will be separated from God forever. No second chances (Hebrews 9:27). However, the Bible also teaches that God is merciful and desires that all people should come to repentance and be saved from the punishment of Hell (II Peter 3:9). This is why Jesus came to earth (John 3:16-17). He does not want us to go to Hell. 2. What does the Bible say about Heaven? The Bible teaches that Heaven is the dwelling place of God. It will eventually be inhabited by those who have confessed the name of Jesus and been baptized into His blood (Acts 2:38). The concept of Heaven is mentioned throughout the Bible, including in the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, Heaven is often referred to as the "heavens," and it is described as the dwelling place of God. In Psalm 103:19, it says, "The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all." In Isaiah 66:1, it says, "Thus says the Lord: 'Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.'" In the New Testament, Jesus often spoke of the kingdom of Heaven. He described Heaven as a place of eternal life for those who believe in him. In John 14:2-3, Jesus says, "In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also." The Bible teaches that Heaven is a place of joy, peace, and eternal life. In Revelation 21:4, it says, "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." The Bible also teaches that Heaven is a place of worship and praise. Revelation confirms that in Heaven all the saved will be in the presence of God forever. We will experience His glory and love through eternity. While the Bible provides limited information about the specifics of Heaven, it teaches us that it is a real and glorious place. Those who believe in Jesus Christ, and are obedient in faith, can look forward to spending eternity there in the presence of God. 3. What do people think about Heaven and Hell today? Beliefs about Heaven and Hell vary widely among different cultures and religions, In many religions circles Heaven is viewed as a paradise or an afterlife reward for those who have lived a good and virtuous life. It is often described as a place of eternal happiness, where people are reunited with loved ones who have passed away. In contrast, Hell is often seen as a place of punishment for those who have led wicked or sinful lives, and is associated with suffering, torment, and eternal damnation. In some modern societies, particularly in Western countries, there has been a decline in religious belief and a corresponding shift away from traditional views of Heaven and Hell. Many people no longer believe in an afterlife or in the existence of Heaven and Hell as physical places. Others may hold more symbolic or metaphorical beliefs about these concepts. There was a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll in 2010 that found that 65% of Americans believed that people go to Heaven, Hell or purgatory after death, 7% believed they go to another dimension, 6% believed they are reborn on earth, and 2% believed they become ghosts. Approximately 13% did not believe in any afterlife, and 7% didn't know. That was in 2010. In 2021 Pew Research presented an updated poll. They found that 73% of Americans believed in Heaven but only 62% believe in Hell. Roughly a quarter of all U.S. adults (26%) say that they do not believe in Heaven or Hell, including 7% who say they do believe in some kind of afterlife and 17% who do not believe in any afterlife at all. Many believed in fate, or karma, but still wrestle with the existence of God. Nearly every culture has a story or illustration about Heaven and Hell. Why? Because it’s been confirmed, taught and read about for nearly 6000 years. God is real. Heaven and Hell are the only two destinations for humanity. Every culture desires to see justice for the wicked and a reward for the righteous. This is why we look up! Heaven provides hope. Hell provokes fear. We all grapple with the idea of mortality. Death comes to all of us. But there is only one way to Heaven and that’s through Jesus (John 14:6). Final thoughts… Your eternal life hangs in the balance. What will you choose? You can only go to Heaven or Hell? Time is running out. If we can help you, or pray for you, our baptize you into Christ, please reach out. There is hope! Just trust and obey. You are loved. - THE TRUTH ABOUT POSITIVE THINKING
There are many compliments that flatter, and others that humble, but my favorite is when people say that I have a "positive" attitude. My prayer is that I can always take that compliment in stride. It is not easy to be positive all the time. I want to suggest that positive thinking can have mental health benefits. Here are some of them: 1. Positive thinking can reduce stress. Positive thinking can help reduce stress levels by promoting feelings of calmness and relaxation. When you approach life with a positive mindset, you may be better able to manage stressors and cope with challenging situations. 2. Positive thinking can improve your mood. Positive thinking can help improve your mood by promoting feelings of happiness, contentment, and optimism. By focusing on the positive aspects of your life and reframing negative thoughts, you may be able to improve your overall emotional well-being. 3. Positive thinking can increase resilience. Positive thinking can help increase resilience by promoting a growth mindset and encouraging you to view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. With a positive mindset, you may be better able to bounce back from adversity and persevere through difficult times. 4. Positive thinking can improve relationships. Positive thinking can help improve your relationships by promoting kindness, compassion, and empathy. When you approach others with a positive mindset, you may be more open to their perspective and better able to communicate effectively. 5. Positive thinking can improve physical health. Positive thinking has been linked to improved physical health outcomes, such as reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and improved immune system functioning. In previous blogs we have noted several ways that mental health can (and will) impact your physical health. While positive thinking alone may not solve all of life's challenges, it can help you approach situations with a more optimistic and productive mindset. By focusing on the positive aspects of your life and working to reframe negative thoughts, you may be able to enjoy improved mental and physical health. I have enjoyed researching and presenting this series of blogs. I welcome your feedback too. Your mental health must be taken seriously. I urge you to visit with a mental health professional if you (or a loved one) struggles with mental health. There is hope! Take your mental health seriously. You are loved. - TIPS ON FINDING THE RIGHT COUNSELOR
About a week ago I blogged about "7 Benefits to Counseling." This prompted Misty and I to discuss how to find the right counselor. Choosing a good counselor can be very personal. It is a subjective decision that must be carefully weighed. Here are some steps that may help you in selecting a counselor who is a good fit for you: 1. Consider the type of counseling you need. There are many different types of counseling, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychoanalytic therapy, and humanistic therapy, among others. Each type of counseling has its own approach and techniques, so it's important to research and understand which type of counseling may be best suited for your needs. If you want counseling from a biblical point of view, it is a necessity to find a good Christian counselor. I cannot stress this enough. Secular counselors may not see through a biblical lens. 2. Look for licensed and qualified counselors. Check the qualifications and credentials of the counselor you are considering. Look for counselors who have a license or certification in their area of expertise. For instance, many counselors will have "LPC" or another title that references their specific certification. There is nothing wrong with approaching a minister or a friend for advice, but you must keep in mind that they may only present advice based on their own personal experiences. For you own benefit you should probably seek someone with a resume full of accolades and experience. 3. Read counselor reviews and testimonials. I've been a Google reviewer for over 5 years now. I check Google, Yelp, Angi and social media pages before choosing a restaurant, plumber or hotel. Why is picking a counselor any different? Look for reviews and testimonials from previous clients to get an idea of the counselor's style, approach, and effectiveness. Also, ask around and find out who other people in your area recommend. 4. Consider the counselor's experience. Certifications are very important but don't discount the time they've been in practice. Find out how long the counselor has been practicing and whether they have experience working with clients who have similar issues to yours. Many clients leave their first counseling experience with a negative attitude because they do not do their due diligence. 5. Assess the counselor's demeanor and communication style. Some counselors may offer an initial phone interview. It's important to feel comfortable with your counselor. Consider whether you feel at ease with the counselor's demeanor and communication style. You may be looking for someone thorough, or possibly someone with good bedside manner, or a clear voice. Look around. 6. Consider the logistics. Think about practical considerations such as location, availability, and cost. You may want to consider whether the counselor offers virtual sessions or has flexible scheduling options. In our current age there are fewer excuses for avoiding counseling. 7. Heed their advice. If it sticks, then stick with them. Most counselors carefully consider your situation, your specific needs and the best way to move forward. Don't ignore their advice. Listen. Follow. And choose to grow through the experience. You can't blame the counselor if you never heeded their advice. Ultimately, the most important factor in choosing a counselor is finding someone who you feel comfortable with and trust. It may take some time and effort to find the right counselor, but the benefits of working with a skilled and supportive professional can be invaluable. Your mental health must be taken seriously. I urge you to visit with a mental health professional if you (or a loved one) struggles with mental health. There is hope! Take your mental health seriously. You are loved. - THE BENEFITS OF GROUNDING: 7 Surprising Facts
Grounding, also called earthing, refers to the practice of connecting with the Earth's surface by walking barefoot or using special grounding devices that conduct the Earth's energy. While there is limited scientific research on the topic, some studies suggest that grounding may have health benefits. Verywellmind claims that grounding (or earthing) "restores the connection between the body and the electrical currents of the earth." How can you practice grounding? Healthline says people typically perform grounding outdoors by lying on the ground. They may also submerge themselves in water. You can also use grounding mats, sheets, or other equipment. We have a close friend that has a grounding wire attached to their bed in the master bedroom. It is often recommended that 30 minutes a day can make a significant difference. How can it help with mental health? We want to share five things that are said to be benefits to grounding. 1. Grounding can reduce inflammation. Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to infection or injury, but chronic inflammation can contribute to many chronic diseases. NCBI suggests that grounding may help reduce inflammation by neutralizing free radicals and reducing oxidative stress. 2. Grounding can improve your sleep Grounding has been shown to improve sleep quality and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. This may be due to the calming effect of grounding on the nervous system. 3. Grounding can reduce stress and anxiety. Grounding has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels, possibly by reducing cortisol levels in the body. It can increase heart rate variability and stabilize your heart rate. It may possibly help with blood pressure and reduce blood viscosity. 4. Grounding can relieve pain. Some studies suggest that grounding may help relieve pain and improve circulation by increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation. Studies show that it can shift the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic toward parasympathetic activation. 5. Grounding can improve immune function. Some preliminary studies suggest that grounding may enhance immune system function and improve wound healing. If grounding can help to normalize the day–night cortisol rhythm, the added benefits can be greater in this area, along with others. It may literally reset (or restore) your body's natural defense. 6. Grounding can improve improve your heart health. The article from Very Well Mind indicates that prolonged grounding can reduce blood pressure levels. If this practice is used regularly it could reduce blood clumping. Of course, as mentioned previously, it could reduce stress and anxiety. Those benefits alone could help your heart. 7. Grounding can get you outside! The use of grounding could help you in your mental health journey. Especially if it encourages you to get out and enjoy nature. How can you do this effectively? Talk a walk barefoot. Sit down in a field or in your yard. Take deep breaths. Play in the dirt. Splash in a mud puddle. Take a walk at the beach. It's important to note that more research is needed to fully understand the health benefits of grounding. However, many people find that grounding is a simple and effective way to promote relaxation and well-being. You might see if it could work for you. Your mental health must be taken seriously. I urge you to visit with a mental health professional if you (or a loved one) struggles with mental health. There is hope! Take your mental health seriously. You are loved. - The Holy Spirit Helps Us To Remember
As long as I can remember I have looked forward to Memorial Day weekend. Even if you don’t participate in a decoration day (previous title for this day), or a family reunion around this holiday, you at least look forward to an extra day on the weekend. Our celebration of Memorial Day, as a federal holiday, is meant to help us remember those who have died serving our country. It is always held on the last Monday in May. If you know your history, then you know that Memorial Day originated after the Civil War to commemorate the soldiers from both sides that died on the battlefield. We continue to extend this holiday for all Americans who have died in military service. It’s more than just the mark of the beginning of the summer vacation season. It’s a day to focus on what we’ve lost and what we’ve gained in regards to our freedom in this country. As you read through your Bible, you will see that God’s people have always observed yearly memorial services. In the Old Testament, the most famous was the Passover which aided in the remembrance the Exodus (Exodus 12, Deuteronomy 16). There were various fasts instituted, some were optional and others commanded, that were intended to memorialize an individual or a group of people. In the New Testament, the most famous memorial is the Lord’s Supper which aided in the remembrance of the death of Jesus on the cross (Matthew 26:26-29, Acts 2:42, I Corinthians 11:23-26). Why is it important to remember those who have died? When we remember the death of others it does at least two things: 1) It encourages us to keep looking at our past, 2) It keeps us thinking about our own death. There is no doubt that death will come to us all. However, there are those who have died for a specific purpose. They fulfilled God’s plan for their life. Have you? Are you ready? Take the Lord’s Supper as an example. Why did Jesus institute a communion that was intended to be observed on the first day of every week by His followers? He does not want us to forget what He has done, nor what impact it should make on our lives. And to make sure that we never forget, what did Jesus do? He promised: “The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you” (John 14:26). God has sent His Holy Spirit into this world to help us remember Him! The Holy Spirit of God has come to teach us and guide us into all truth (John 16:13). Often times we need a memorial stone or some kind of commemorative decoration to remind us of things that must not be forgotten. God has inserted His Spirit into His people so that we don’t need stones or decorations. We possess a greater adornment (I John 4:4). - GIVE IT TO GOD: Prayer & Your Mental Health
The topic of prayer is complex and multifaceted. I wonder how many people know the power of prayer. In the past I’ve given dozens of scriptures ands stories about how prayer works. Instead, let’s focus on some stats. According to a 2018 Pew Research Center survey, about 55% of adults in the United States say they pray daily. The frequency of prayer varies by religious affiliation, with higher rates of daily prayer reported by people who identify as religiously affiliated. Many people (even non-religious) believe that prayer can have a positive impact on their lives. For example, a 2017 survey conducted by the American Psychiatric Association found that 48% of Americans believe that prayer can help people recover from illness or injury. Studies also show that people are likely to appreciate the sentiment when you promise to pay for them. Some medical studies have explored the potential health benefits of prayer. For example, a 2006 study published in the American Heart Journal found that intercessory prayer (prayer on behalf of another person) did not have a significant effect on the recovery of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery. That was just one study. Other studies have found evidence that prayer may have positive effects on health outcomes, lower blood pressure, relieve anxiety and calm depression. Prayer is a common practice in many religious traditions around the world, including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and many others. The frequency and nature of prayer practices can vary widely across different cultures and traditions. Therefore, praying is a common practice and widely accepted in our society. As Christians we understand the power of prayer because we serve the One True God. Our mental health increases and endures because we know that we are not alone. One major benefit to prayer is that it allows us to see the needs of others. We often have to put others at the forefront of our minds. We live in a world that propagates self-centeredness. Prayer helps us to look inward and outward. Prayer helps us to be humble, compassionate and kind toward others. Many times we will make a list of people to pray for (and their specific need) which encourages us to have a vested interest in their well-being. This is a tremendous blessing to our mental health. Another major benefit to prayer is that seek God’s wisdom and guidance. When our trials get rough, and we don’t know what to do, we can always seek guidance from God. Prayer is the perfect way to welcome God to help us in our specific situation. When we pray for wisdom, we are asking God to help us understand what we should do and how to do it correctly. God will guide us onto the right path and empower us with the strength to endure. This is especially good for our mental health. We can lay down our burdens! It's important to note that the topic of prayer is often studied in the context of religion and spirituality, which can be complex and multifaceted topics in their own right. As Christians, we know that God hears is when we pray. We know He is compassionate and loving. So let’s pray! Your mental health must not be taken lightly. I urge you to visit with a mental health professional if you (or a loved one) struggles with mental health. There is hope! Take your mental health seriously. You are loved. - THE SILENT SECRET: Practicing Mindful Meditation
Many people talk about mediation these days, like it’s some kind of fad, but it’s been around for thousands of years. It’s a useful tool that many find reduces anxiety and adds enjoyment to their lives. It’s also one of the best ways to learn how your individual brain works. You can learn a lot by sitting still and observing your thoughts and tendencies. You learn that you are completely separate from your thoughts and urges. You’re just observing them. They don’t have to be acted upon. Sit. And think. Meditation quiets the mind and allows you to experience the world free of your opinions and beliefs. Many proponents of meditation believe that our natural state is one of happiness, but our perceptions and beliefs are faulty and can get in the way of true happiness and contentment. Research has shown that meditation can have a number of benefits for both physical and mental health. For example, it can help reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure, improve sleep, and increase feelings of well-being and happiness. Meditation is a practice that involves training the mind to achieve a state of relaxation, focus, and inner peace, which is why it has been practiced for thousands of years in various cultures and traditions. While there are meditation retreats, camps, and expert instructors available for hire, you can learn enough on your own to be thrilled with the results. Remember that books and free videos are available, too. Specifically, we have several psalms that were written with the intention of aiding the Israelites in meditation. You can use meditation as a tool to reduce anxiety and worry. How can you do this? Here are some suggestions: 1. Find a quiet and comfortable place to sit. It can be a couch, chair, or pillow on the floor. What’s important is that you be comfortable. Staying motionless is important. Jesus suggested a closet or inner room with no windows. Something firm can be more comfortable after a few minutes than something soft. 2. Start by focusing on your breathing. Just notice and feel the air moving past your nose or lips. Feel your chest expanding and collapsing. Do your best to stay with your breath. Eventually, your mind will wander. It might not take long, but the length of time will increase with practice. 3. Try your best not to get distracted. For now, just catch yourself when you start daydreaming or thinking about anything other than your breath. Return your focus to the breath. Observe the thought without engaging with it. You’ll know you’re doing it wrong if you become emotional in any way. Just notice the thought and sit with it. It will fade on its own if you keep your distance. Then, return to your breathing. You might find it helpful to meditate on one specific Scripture or thought. Check out the 22 minute meditation prompts we've provided on YouTube. 4. Decide on a specific amount of time. Start with five minutes but extend the time to at least 20 minutes. Meditation is more work than you think. Be gentle with yourself and start slowly. Increase the time over the coming weeks. It's okay to use a timer or meditate to certain songs. When time is up just breathe deep and take on the day! That’s it! It can be that simple to greatly reduce your anxiety and tendency to worry. Mastering meditation can take years, but you don’t need to be an expert to enjoy great benefits from meditation. Be patient. It’s not as easy to sit for 20-30 minutes as you think. It's important to note that mental health is very important. I highly encourage you to visit with a mental health professional if you (or a loved one) struggles with mental health. There is hope! Take your mental health seriously. You are loved. - COPING WITH P.T.S.D.: Understanding Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health disorder that can occur after someone experiences (or witnesses) a traumatic event (or series of events). Examples of traumatic events that can trigger PTSD include sexual assault, physical violence, emotional distress, natural disasters, combat experience, and serious accidents. PTSD can cause a range of symptoms including intrusive thoughts or memories, distressing dreams, unprovoked flashbacks, avoidance of triggers, negative changes in mood or thought patterns, detachment, feeling emotionally numb, hyperarousal, easily startled and/or irritability when reminded of a traumatic event. These symptoms can be severe and long-lasting, and can significantly impair an individual's ability to function effectively in work, social, and personal situations. The affects of PTSD are far reaching. In fact, there is a significant number of people that suffer worldwide. According to the National Center for PTSD, about 7-8% of the U.S. population will have PTSD at some point in their lives. One of the highest number of victims with PTSD is found among our military veterans and first responders. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, about 11-20% of veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have PTSD in a given year. This does not include a number of vets that have served in other conflicts and current servicemen and women currently on duty. PTSD can affect people of all ages, including children. About 3-6% of children and adolescents in the U.S. have PTSD. However, women are more likely than men to experience PTSD. About 10% of women develop PTSD at some point in their lives, compared to about 4% of men. One major reason for this number is because of survivors of sexual assault. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, about 94% of women who are raped experience symptoms of PTSD during the two weeks following the assault. Many suffer for years after the assault. It's important to note that these statistics above are based on self-reporting. Countless people may not seek treatment or may not be diagnosed with PTSD. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the risk of PTSD for many people, although specific statistics on this are not yet available. Treatment for PTSD typically involves a combination of therapy and medication. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a common approach to treating PTSD, and may involve exposure therapy, which involves gradually exposing the individual to the triggers that cause their symptoms in a safe and controlled environment. Medications such as antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs may also be used to help manage symptoms. It's important to seek help if you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of PTSD. With proper treatment, individuals with PTSD can learn to manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
