What About the Rapture?
Updated: Oct 15

Recently, a question was asked about what the Bible says about the rapture. What a great question! There is a great deal of confusion surrounding this topic. Please consider reading this blog with an open heart and mind. And, of course, an open Bible.
The topic of the end times, and specifically the concept of "the rapture" is one that generates a lot of discussion today. We are always glad to examine what God’s Word has to say on these critical subjects.
From a Church of Christ perspective, our standard of faith and practice relies strictly on the Scriptures alone, striving to distinguish between divine truth and human traditions.
1. Amillennialism: The Spiritual Reign of Christ
We hold to what is historically referred to as an amillennial perspective. This means we do not believe in a future, literal 1,000-year reign of Christ on an earthly throne.
Instead, the Scriptures teach that Jesus Christ was exalted to His throne at His resurrection and ascension, and He is reigning right now as Lord of lords and King of kings:
The Church is the Kingdom: Jesus established His kingdom during the first century on the day of Pentecost. Paul writes in Colossians 1:13 that God "has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love."
Symbolic Language in Revelation: The term "thousand years" appears in Revelation 20, a book heavily written in apocalyptic symbolism. In Bible numerology, 1000 represents completeness or perfection (e.g., God owns "the cattle on a thousand hills" in Psalm 50:10). Christ’s reign is complete, spiritual, and ongoing now, not deferred to a physical realm in the future (John 18:36).
2. "The Rapture": Human Tradition vs. Biblical Soundness
The popular concept of "the rapture" a secret or two-stage return of Christ where believers are quietly whisked away years before a second coming is not a doctrine found in Scripture.
A Modern Invention: The popular left-behind scenario originated in the 1830s through John Nelson Darby and dispensational theology. It has been widely popularized in modern times through secular literature, movies, and popular fiction, but it is not grounded in ancient biblical teaching.
The Doctrines of Men: Jesus warned us about adopting theological systems created by human tradition:"And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men." Matthew 15:9
What Does the Bible Teach About Christ's Return?
When Christ returns, Scripture describes one single, visible, and audible General Judgment for all mankind, occurring on the final day:
It Will Be Universal and Visible:"For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord." I Thessalonians 4:16-17
It Will Be Audible and Public: Far from a secret event, it will happen with a trumpet blow, a shout, and visible glory (Revelation 1:7).
All Will Be Judged Simultaneously:"Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation." John 5:28-29
3. Interpreting Revelation: A Historical / Preterist View
Rather than viewing Revelation as a timeline or blueprint for modern 21st-century geopolitics, we view the book through a preterist / historical lens.
Context for the Original Readers: Revelation was written to 1st-century Christians facing severe persecution under the Roman Empire. The book opens and closes by explicitly stating that these events were to "shortly take place" (Revelation 1:1; Revelation 22:6).
The Ultimate Message: Revelation is a message of comfort and victory for persecuted believers, showing that despite Rome’s power (and all earthly opposition), God overcomes, and His saints share in Christ’s ultimate victory.
Summary
When we set aside human theories and secular pop-culture interpretations, the Bible presents a clear and comforting picture: Jesus Christ is reigning today as King. When He comes again on the Last Day, He will raise the dead, judge the world in righteousness, and usher His faithful children into eternal life in Heaven (II Peter 3:10-13).
We encourage everyone to study these Scriptures carefully and test all doctrines against the pure Word of God (I Thessalonians 5:21). Please let us know if you have any follow-up questions!
You are loved.
